This foodie bride chose London’s Spring restaurant for her wedding venue

She also convinced her chef father to recreate her favourite dish of his that you can’t order anywhere else

The most romantic gestures are often the simplest - especially when you’ve been together for a long time. Such was the case for interior designer Millie Howard, whose boyfriend of almost a decade, graphic designer Jamie Kaye, proposed to her over a box of pizza they were sharing on the floor of their first flat. “We’d just moved in that day and I’d been asking him for so long when he was going to propose,” Millie remembers. “Then I turned around and he was down on one knee with a ring. It was perfect. It was so nice not to have anyone else around, and for it to just be the two of us.”

With her dad and brother both working as chefs, Millie knew she wanted the wedding reception to take place at a restaurant - as well as in London, where they’re both from. “We wanted the food to be a really key part of it,” she says. “There’s a surprisingly small list of London restaurants that can cater for over 60 people, but once we knew we could host it at Spring, we knew it was the one. The food there is just perfect - we’d been there for so many celebrations over the years.”

When it came to finding her dress, Millie took a pragmatic approach. “I tried not to be too close-minded or restrict myself too much,” she says. “I wanted to try lots of different things. I felt like I needed to do my due diligence.” After trying on several other styles at The OWN Studio, her mum suggested she try on Style 074, a silk mikado gown with a simple v-neck bodice and spaghetti straps paired with a more dramatic pleated full skirt. “It wasn’t what I imagined I’d go for at all - I thought I’d choose something a little more understated, but once I tried it on, I was obsessed. I loved the taffeta silk, which was so lightweight.”

“The walk from the hotel to the church was about five minutes down The Strand, which was a crazy experience, with buses beeping at us and people shouting”

It was a lack of organisation that led to Millie wearing her mum’s veil and wedding shoes, but she’s glad she did. “It was really special,” she says. She also borrowed her earrings and bracelet from Boodles, as well as a necklace from her bridesmaid, Clara. “I was going to wear my granny’s blue ring as well, for my ‘something blue’, but I didn’t in the end as it just slipped my mind,” she says. Jamie, meanwhile, wore a navy suit from Scott Fraser Collection. “He’s very into fashion,” says Millie. “He used to work at Duke + Dexter, so he and his groomsmen all wore shoes from there.” Her bridesmaids wore caramel-coloured dresses from Maids to Measure, choosing from a variety of different silhouettes to find what best suited them.

The ceremony took place on 31st May, on one of the first summer days of the year - though thankfully, not in the midst of a heatwave. Millie started the day with a 5:30am run with her dad around central London before getting ready in her hotel room with iced matcha lattes. “The walk from the hotel to the church was about five minutes down The Strand, which was a crazy experience, with buses beeping at us and people shouting,” she remembers.

Jamie’s best friend’s dad (a priest) married the couple. “As I was walking up to the church, I could see Jamie in there, and it was just this crazy moment,” Millie says. “I thought I might cry, or get overwhelmed by it, but it didn’t happen. I just felt so happy and relaxed.” One of the couple’s friends sang At Last by Etta James as they were signing the register, before everyone walked the short distance to Spring for the wedding breakfast.

Having a dad who is a chef has its perks, and Millie managed to convince hers over a year-long campaign to recreate one of her favourite dishes for the big day. “I’ve always said his langoustine, truffle purée and potato gnocchi dish that he made years ago for a now-closed restaurant was my favourite thing ever,” she says. “Obviously, you can’t order it anymore. But I begged him to make it for the reception, so he brought his head chef to Spring and they cooked it.”

The rest of the menu included a parmesan and melon salad, chicken, peas and morels for the main, and a strawberry and gooseberry cake for dessert in lieu of a wedding cake. Guests danced to a live band and DJ sets from the couple’s friends and family (including Jamie’s uncle), with everything winding down by 12.30am. Throughout it all, Millie kept her original wedding dress on instead of changing into a specific party dress, as is so often the case these days. “I just loved it so much,” she says. “I wanted to stay in it for as long as possible!”

The dress! Millie’s morning started with a 5:30am run through central London with her dad.
