The 374 guide to bridal spray tans

From when to book to how to avoid tan transfer, here’s our expert-approved advice for a glorious wedding day glow

Like great bridal makeup, the best bridal spray tans shouldn’t look like spray tans at all. Today’s formulas are designed to subtly enhance your skin tone, lending warmth, luminosity and that elusive glow from within. The science behind spray tans has come on leaps and bounds in recent years, meaning achieving a believable finish has never been easier - even if you’re a complete newbie.

From when to book your bridal spray tan to how to prepare your skin and avoid staining your wedding dress, getting it right is all about timing, technique and choosing the right formula. We asked James Harknett - often referred to as “the Tom Ford of tanning” - to share the advice he gives every bride before the big day.

Bridal spray tan timeline

If you're wondering when to start preparing, here's Harknett's recommended timeline:

4-6 weeks before: book your trial

2-3 weeks before: start regular exfoliation

2-3 days before: wax if needed

2 days before: have your spray tan

24 hours before: shave (if shaving rather than waxing)

Morning of: moisturise only as advised by your tanning expert

When should you book your bridal spray tan?

When it comes to timing, James suggests that booking your appointment two days before your wedding day is generally ideal. “Most brides decide that the second day after the spray tan is when it looks its best.”

Will a bridal spray tan stain my wedding dress?

“If you have your spray tan two days before your big day, this will give you plenty of time to have two or three cool showers in that time, which will make sure all guide colour has been washed away,” says Harknett. “This will give you peace of mind that nothing will rub onto the inside of your wedding dress.”

Should you wax or shave before a bridal spray tan?

Hair removal should always come first. “With regards to prepping, ensure any shaving or waxing is done well in advance,” says Harknett. “Not only will this allow pores to close, but it also gives time for the skin to renew. Tanning straight after waxing is a disaster, so wax a good two to three days before the tan. You can shave 24 hours before.”

How should you prepare your skin before a bridal spray tan?

“Start exfoliating a few weeks beforehand - particularly in areas where clothing creates friction, like beneath bra straps or where clothes are tight on the body,” says Harknett. “The skin gets compacted by the tightness of fabrics against the body and can lead to the tan going darker on bra strap lines and around the boobs leading up to the armpit area. Three Warriors Organic Australian Sand Scrub is my top choice for smoothing and hydrating skin.”

What should you wear after a bridal spray tan?

“After your treatment, wear something loose and avoid a bra. A baggy maxi dress is perfect - and get a cab home from the salon or spa if you can. Dusting some talc under the arms and in the creases always ensures my clients avoid smudges and streaks.”

Do you need a bridal spray tan trial?

“A tanning trial for your wedding is as important as your dress fitting. Have it two days before your makeup trial so your foundation can be matched. The undertone of your skin is a huge factor in choosing the right tanning formula so make sure you have at least one trial before your big day. It’s crucial you feel the colour feels true to your natural skin tone.”

How can you make your bridal spray tan last?

“Avoid the bath and keep showers quicker and cooler than normal. Remember, fake tan dyes our dead skin cells, so we need to keep them intact for the longest time possible – hot water beating down on your skin will encourage it to wear away faster. Gently dry the skin with a quick pat, then use your hair dryer on the cool setting.

“Once the skin is dry, moisturise it generously twice a day. For an instant moisture boost that will also help your tan last longer, apply a thin layer of Three Warriors Gradual Tan. The avocado oil extract enriches the skin with vitamins and will extend the colour for your honeymoon.”
