How to host a chic rehearsal dinner, according to a top event stylist

The art of hosting begins the night before - here's how to set the tone for a memorable wedding weekend

Rehearsal dinners have grown in popularity in recent years, offering couples the chance to soft-launch the celebrations and get guests mingling ahead of the main event. But with most taking place in restaurant settings, how can you make them feel personal rather than formulaic?

We spoke to event producer and stylist Leila Godfrey about how to host a rehearsal dinner that feels entirely yours - without creating a mountain of extra admin.

How can couples make restaurant table settings feel personal, rather than generic?

Skip the Canva template and instead work with a stationery designer or commission a calligrapher to design your menus by hand. The difference between a printed template and something beautifully hand-lettered is immediately felt the moment guests sit down. It’s a simple way to make a table feel elevated and genuinely personal without blowing the budget.

I love working with Edlyl Asis (@by.edlyl) for calligraphy and Laura Lukaz (@lauralksz) for stationery design.

Which details make the biggest difference to the overall feel of the evening, but are often overlooked?

Hiring chairs costs more, but nothing transforms the look and feel of a private dining room quite like it. It's also the perfect opportunity to be a little braver with colour. If bold chairs don’t feel quite right for the main event, lean into them the night before. Right now, I'm obsessed with blue lacquer.

Look to NYED, Hire It, Lounge & Linger and Juno Hire for gorgeous options.

and for good reason

Are there any styling or table-setting approaches you find work particularly well within a restaurant environment?

My general rule is to keep the restaurant's crockery and cutlery as they are. The team knows what works best with each course, and it keeps the kitchen happy, which is always a good idea. That said, there's still plenty of room to play elsewhere.

Ask whether you can rethink how drinks are presented - a lace doily beneath a tray, for example, or ribbon tied around the handles. I also love bringing in unusually shaped carafes to serve wine down the table. Wine bottles placed in the middle of a beautifully dressed table can feel clunky, whereas a beautiful carafe is such an easy, affordable upgrade.

You can also hire luxury napkins to add colour and texture to the table. Or head to a fabric shop, choose a print you love and bespoke napkins made. Don't be shy about going bold - these are statement linens you'll get to keep and bring out for special occasions for years to come.

A-One Fabrics and Goldbrick Fabrics, both on London’s Goldhawk Road, are brilliant starting points
